Hiking the Malan’s Peak Route in Ogden, Utah
Based in Ogden, Utah, Robert Henneberger is a Wells Fargo Advisors financial professional who provides services tailored to individual client needs. Among Robert Henneberger’s favorite activities is taking hikes in the local area with his family.
One trail with exceptional views is Malan’s Peak, which involves moderate, but constant, climbing. The payoff is a vista that extends beyond the Ogden Valley to take in the Great Salt Lake and Ben Lomond Peak, as well as the surrounding Wasatch Mountains.
With the Utah trail popular among local residents out with dogs, one draw is that there is shade from trees until the last stretch to the summit. There are also numerous rattlesnakes in the vicinity, so it pays to maintain a close watch on the trail. Keep in mind that until the snow melts in the early summer, there will often be stretches of trail in the upper elevations that are steep and slippery enough to make the use of crampons advisable.
For those who want to camp overnight, it is possible to hike a half mile beyond the peak to Malan’s Basin. Having housed a hotel in the 19th century, the area is now accessible to backpackers with tents.
